Christopher Lemons est plongeur professionnel depuis plus de 14 ans, spécialisé dans la plongée sous-marine à saturation, travaillant presque exclusivement pour l’industrie du pétrole et du gaz.
Cette forme de plongée hautement spécialisée implique de vivre dans une chambre de décompression jusqu’à 28 jours à la suite à la limite de la claustrophobie, de se rendre quotidiennement au fond de la mer dans une cloche de plongée et de travailler à des profondeurs allant jusqu’à 270 mètres pendant 6 heures d’affilée.
En septembre 2012, une panne anormale du système de positionnement dynamique du navire sous lequel il travaillait a entraîné la coupure complète de son arrivée d’oxygène, de la lumière et du chauffage. Il s’est retrouvé dans l’obscurité totale, dans les fonds marins à 90 mètres sous la surface, avec seulement 5 minutes d’oxygène restant dans les bouteilles d’urgence qu’il transportait sur le dos, sans aucun moyen de se protéger des températures glaciales.
Il a fallu plus de 40 minutes à ses sauveteurs héroïques pour revenir le chercher dans les profondeurs, et son expérience de survie ne cesse de surprendre et d’inspirer les experts.
Son histoire extraordinaire a fait l’objet du documentaire à succès Netflix/BBC « Last Breath ». Christopher Lemons continue de plonger à ce jour.
Il est né à Édimbourg, a grandi à Cambridge et vit dans les Highlands écossais avec sa femme et sa fille.
