En 2010, Marsha Ivins a pris sa retraite de la NASA après une carrière de 37 ans en tant qu’ingénieure et astronaute. Après avoir été diplômée de l’Université du Colorado en génie aérospatial, Marsha a rejoint en 1974 le Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center à Houston au Texas, pour travailler principalement sur des missions en lien avec les facteurs humains et l’ingénierie homme-machine, dans le cadre de la conception du cockpit, de l’affichage et des commandes de vol d’Orbiter. En 1980, Marsha a été affectée en tant qu’ingénieure aérospatiale sur l’avion expérimental (Shuttle Training Aircraft) de la NASA et comme pilote de l’avion de la NASA. Elle détient une licence de pilote de type Gulfstream-1, une licence de pilotage commerciale valide pour le transport aérien, terrestre, maritime, ainsi que des qualifications d’instructeur de vol. Elle a enregistré au total plus de 7 000 heures de vol à bord d’avions civils et de la NASA.
Marsha a été nommée « Mission Specialist » en 1984.
Ayant participé à cinq vols spatiaux, elle a enregistré plus de 1 318 heures dans l’espace.
Au cours de son mandat dans l’agence Astronaut Office, Marsha a soutenu les programmes de la navette spatiale et de la station spatiale dans l’ensemble des domaines en lien avec l’interface opérationnelle de l’équipage. Elle a été l’experte en équipement, habitabilité, imagerie et arrimage de l’équipage. Au cours des 4 dernières années passées au sein de l’agence, Marsha a dirigé l’équipe en place et a soutenu le programme « Constellation » et l’initiative « Commercial Crew Development ».
Aujourd’hui, Marsha travaille en tant que consultante indépendante en ingénierie.
