Avant cela, il était vice-président de Google, professeur à l’université Stanford, directeur du Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) et également professeur à l’Université Carnegie Mellon.
Chez Google, il a fondé X, anciennement appelé Google X Lab, au sein duquel des travaux sont menés sur des innovations de rupture en lien avec la robotique et l’intelligence artificielle.
Sebastian Thrun a dirigé le développement et la conception du véhicule robotique « Stanley » qui a remporté le DARPA Grand Challenge en 2005 et qui est aujourd’hui exposé au musée national d’histoire américaine de la Smithsonian Institution. Son équipe a également développé un second véhicule appelé « Junior », qui a atteint la seconde position au classement du DARPA Grand Challenge en 2007.
Sebastian Thrun a également dirigé l’équipe qui a travaillé sur le développement des voitures autonomes chez Google. Il est actuellement professeur adjoint à l’Université de Stanford et à Georgia Tech.
