Considéré comme le grimpeur en solo intégral (c’est-à-dire sans cordes) le plus célèbre au monde, Alain Robert est surnommé le « Spiderman français » et le « grimpeur urbain ».
Il est connu dans le monde entier pour avoir escaladé plus de 80 gratte-ciels sans cordes. En 2011, il escalade à mains nues Burj Khalifa à Dubaï, la plus haute tour du monde. Robert profite de chacune de ses ascensions spectaculaires pour rassembler des fonds destinés à des organismes caritatifs, ou mettre en lumière certaines causes qu’il soutient. Il parcoure également la planète en tant que conférencier, partageant son expérience hors du commun.
Avant d’escalader des gratte-ciels, Alain Robert est spécialisé dans l’escalade rocheuse, s’attaquant aux falaises les plus extrêmes du monde en solo intégral, et établissant de nombreux records de difficulté. En Septembre 1982, il est victime d’un grave accident : une chute de quinze mètres la tête la première, lors d’une descente en rappel. Il passe six jours dans le coma et souffre de multiples fractures (crâne, nez, poignets, coudes, bassin et talons). Les médecins lui annoncent alors qu’il ne pourra plus jamais grimper : il les fera pourtant mentir, puisqu’il grimpe à nouveau un an plus tard, non sans certaines séquelles, et notamment un souci de vertige.
En 1994, il escalade son premier gratte-ciel à Chicago et c’est ainsi que naît « le grimpeur urbain ». C’est le début d’un véritable tour du monde des exploits, Alain Robert enchaînant les escalades spectaculaires très médiatisées, parfois sans autorisation. Sur son tableau de chasse, on trouve ainsi la Tour Eiffel, l’Empire State Building, les tours jumelles Petronas de Kuala Lumpur, ou encore la Tour Montparnasse.
Plus récemment, en Mars 2018, il s’est hissé au sommet de la tour Total de Paris, observé par des centaines de curieux. En 2015, il avait escaladé la tour Engie, un autre gratte-ciel parisien, afin de « militer pour un système bancaire plus transparent» , accrochant à son sommet une banderole « Rien à cacher », ainsi que le logo d’une plateforme de transfert d’argent.
