Avant d’entamer une carrière politique, M. Paterson rejoint l’entreprise familiale de cuir dont il prend la direction en 1994. Devenant plus tard président de COTANCE, la confédération européenne des tanneurs, il voyage partout dans le monde et trouve l’inspiration qui guidera ses croyances politiques.
M. Paterson est un fervent défenseur du localisme, de la liberté d’entreprendre et de la non – interférence dans la vie des individus. Il croit que la fiscalité et la bureaucratie devraient être réduites au minimum afin de laisser aux gens toutes les chances de réaliser leur potentiel. Au cours des treize dernières années, il s’est battu au nom de ses constituants pour une meilleure politique de santé, les écoles primaires locales, l’amélioration des services de transports, des bureaux de postes, des “Magistrates Courts” (équivalent des tribunaux d’instance) et contre les forces de police régionales.
En tant que porte-parole de l’opposition sur les questions d’agriculture, il devient expert en tuberculose bovine et fait campagne pour l’industrie laitière.
