Supachai Panitchpakdi est l’ancien secrétaire général de la CNUCED (2005-2013), l’ancien directeur général de l’Organisation Mondiale du Commerce (2002-2005) et l’ancien vice-premier ministre de Thaïlande.
En 1973, Supachai Panitchpakdi a soutenu sa thèse de doctorat sur la planification et le développement des ressources humaines sous la direction de Jan Tinbergen, le premier lauréat du prix Nobel d’économie. En 1986, il est élu au Parlement thaïlandais et nommé vice-ministre des finances. En 1988, il est nommé directeur et conseiller, puis président de la Banque militaire thaïlandaise.
En 1992, il est nommé vice-premier ministre de Thaïlande, chargé de superviser l’élaboration de la politique économique et commerciale du pays. À ce titre, il participe activement à la politique commerciale internationale et représente la Thaïlande à la cérémonie de signature de l’Uruguay Round Agreement à Marrakech en 1994. Il a également participé à l’élaboration d’accords régionaux, notamment la Coopération économique Asie-Pacifique (APEC), l’Association des nations de l’Asie du Sud-Est (ASEAN) et l’Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM).
En 2001, Supachai Panitchpakdi devient professeur invité à l’International Institute for Management Development de Lausanne. Il a ensuite été nommé secrétaire général de l’Organisation mondiale du commerce, puis secrétaire général de la CNUCED.
