Yvan Bourgnon est un passionné de navigation depuis que ses parents l’emmènent faire un tour du monde à l’âge de 8 ans. Très vite, il se prend au jeu de la vitesse en naviguant sur les multicoques et en participant à des compétitions. Son palmarès débute en 1995 avec un triplé inédit jusqu’à aujourd’hui : Mini-Fastnet, Transgascogne et Mini-Transat. Depuis, il s’est illustré dans de nombreuses courses : record de la traversée de la Méditerranée en 2010, record des 24h en cata de sport lors du défi Linxéa en 2012, ou encore le défi Terrésens en devenant le premier à franchir le passage du Cap Horn en cata de sport.
Le 5 octobre 2013, il part des Sables-d’Olonne en compagnie de Vincent Beauvarlet pour un tour du monde « à l’ancienne » sur un catamaran de sport de 6,30 m non- habitable. Ils ne bénéficient pas d’assistance, ne reçoivent pas d’informations météo et n’ont pas de GPS. Ils n’ont qu’un sextant, un téléphone satellitaire et des cartes traditionnelles.
