Elle a été la première femme nommée Premier ministre du Danemark et a exercé ses fonctions de 2011 à 2015. Thorning-Schmidt a été membre du Parlement européen de 1999 à 2004 pour représenter le Danemark. En 2005, elle a été élue au Parlement danois en tant que chef de file du parti social-démocrate.
À la suite de sa carrière en politique, Helle Thorning-Schmidt a rejoint en 2016 l’ONGI Save the Children International en tant que seconde directrice générale. Elle a supervisé les programmes humanitaires et de développement qui viennent en aide à 55 millions d’enfants issus de plus de 120 pays.
