Jean Jouzel est paléo-climatologue au laboratoire des sciences du climat et de l’environnement (CEA/CNRS/UVSQ). C’est au sein de cet organisme qu’il a fait l’essentiel de sa carrière scientifique, largement consacrée à la reconstitution des climats du passé à partir de l’étude des glaces de l’Antarctique et du Groenland, travaux pour lesquels il est reconnu mondialement.
Directeur de recherche, puis directeur adjoint du Laboratoire des sciences du climat et de l’environnement auquel il est toujours rattaché, il devient ensuite directeur de l’Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL) qui fédère les laboratoires de la région parisienne travaillant sur le climat et l’environnement.
Membre du groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC, Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat) depuis plus de 20 ans, il est un des leaders dans la diffusion vers le public des conséquences des activités humaines sur le climat de notre planète. Jean Jouzel est par ailleurs membre du Conseil d’Administration de l’ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche), en tant que président du Haut Conseil de la science et de la technologie.
Au cours de sa carrière, il a été l’auteur de plus de 250 publications scientifiques dont environ 200 sont parues dans les meilleures revues scientifiques comme Nature ou Science. Il est l’un des auteurs les plus cités dans le domaine des sciences de l’univers.
