Avant de devenir astronaute, c était avant tout un pilote émérite qui totalise plus de 13.000 heures de vol sur plus de 300 appareils différents. Cette vocation de pilote lui est venue aux premières heures de son enfance, et l’a guidé tout au long de sa carrière.
Patrick Baudry vise avant tout le dépassement de lui-même. Il aime la découverte et l’aventure et a toujours tout fait pour aller au bout de ses rêves.
Sélectionné par le Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales pour former le premier groupe de spationautes français, il suit l’entraînement des cosmonautes soviétiques à la Cité des Etoiles près de Moscou, jusqu’en 1982. Membre du deuxième équipage du premier vol spatial franco-soviétique, il est formé pour effectuer des expériences scientifiques dans des domaines tels que la physiologie, la biologie, l’astronomie, l’astrophysique et l’élaboration de matériaux dans l’Espace.
Le 23 Mars 1984, Patrick Baudry rejoint le corps des Astronautes de la N.A.S.A. basé à Houston, au Texas, pour préparer le premier vol franco-américain. Au terme d’une année d’entraînement, il est affecté à la mission 51-E sur CHALLENGER, puis à la mission 51-G sur DISCOVERY. Le lancement a lieu le 17 Juin 1985 au départ de CAP CANAVERAL en Floride.
En 1986, il est nommé Conseiller du Président d’Aérospatiale Société. Il est également le pilote d’essai pour « European space plane Hermes », pour lequel Aérospatiale était le maître d’œuvre industriel .
De 1993 à 2003, Baudry est conseillé pour les vols spatiaux habités chez d’EADS, et pilote d’essai principal pour Airbus. Il fonde le premier « European Space Training Centre » à Cannes pour la préparation à la vie dans l’espace.
