Rutger Bregman est né à Renesse, aux Pays-Bas, d’un père pasteur et d’une mère enseignante spécialisée dans l’éducation des enfants ayant des besoins particuliers. Il a étudié l’histoire à l’université d’Utrecht et à l’université de Californie à Los Angeles (UCLA). Après avoir initialement envisagé une carrière d’historien universitaire, Rutger Bregman s’est finalement lancé dans le journalisme. Il a commencé sa carrière au journal néerlandais De Volkskrant avant de rejoindre la plateforme de journalisme indépendante De Correspondent, pour laquelle il a écrit pendant dix ans.
