Chercheur spécialiste en intelligence artificielle, elle travaille à la réduction des impacts négatifs de l’IA. Jusqu’à son récent licenciement de Google, qui a déclenché un mouvement syndical ayant abouti à la formation du premier syndicat de travailleurs de la tech chez Google, Timnit a codirigé une équipe de recherche sur l’IA éthique. Avant de travailler chez Google, elle a mené une mission de recherche chez Microsoft Research (New York) et dans le groupe FATE, où elle a travaillé sur les biais algorithmiques et les implications éthiques, au cœur de projets visant à obtenir des informations à partir des données.
Timnit Gebru a obtenu son doctorat au Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, et a étudié pour sa thèse des images accessibles au public à grande échelle, afin d’acquérir des connaissances sociologiques.
