Alejandro Aravena est diplômé en architecture de l’Université catholique du Chili en 1992. En 1991, toujours étudiant, il participe au prix de Venise lors de l’exposition internationale d’architecture de la Ve Biennale de Venise. En 1993, il étudie l’histoire et la théorie à l’IUAV et la gravure à l’Accademia di Belle Arti de Venise.
Il a fondé « Alejandro Aravena Architects » en 1994. De 2000 à 2005, il a été professeur à l’Université de Harvard, où l’aventure de la fondation ELEMENTAL a débuté.
ELEMENTAL est un Do Tank fondé en 2001, dirigé par Alejandro Aravena et composé de Gonzalo Arteaga, Juan Cerda, Victor Oddó et Diego Torres. Le studio travaille sur des projets d’intérêt public et à fort impact social : le logement, l’espace public, les infrastructures, ou encore les transports.
Alejandro Aravena a été membre du jury du prix Pritzker de 2009 à 2015. Il a été nommé membre honoraire de l’International RIBA (2009) et membre du conseil d’administration du Cities Program de la LSE (2011). Il est également membre du conseil consultatif régional du Centre David Rockefeller pour les études latino-américaines, membre du conseil d’administration de la fondation suisse Holcim et membre fondateur de la Société des politiques publiques chiliennes. Il a dirigé le Helsinki Design Lab pour le SITRA (Fonds d’innovation du gouvernement finlandais) chargé de concevoir une stratégie nationale visant la neutralité carbone.
Il était l’une des 100 personnalités qui ont participé au Rio + 20 Global Summit en 2012 et a participé à des conférences dans le monde entier, incluant notamment le Pritzkers Laureate’s Conversation au siège de l’ONU à New York en 2016, avec pour sujet les défis futurs pour l’environnement bâti. Il a participé à un événement TED Talk Global à Rio de Janeiro en 2014 intitulé « Ma philosophie architecturale ? Faire participer la communauté au processus ».
Il est l’auteur de « Los Hechos de la Arquitectura » (Les faits architecturaux, Santiago, 1999), « El Lugar de la Arquitectura » (La place dans / de l’architecture, Santiago, 2002) et « Material de Arquitectura » (L’architecture, Santiago, 2003).
Electa a publié la monographie « Alejandro Aravena; progettare e costruire » (Milan, 2007) et Toto a publié « Alejandro Aravena; the Forces in Architecture » (Tokyo, 2011).
En 2011, a été publié “ELEMENTAL Incremental Housing and Participatory Design Manual” par Hatje-Cantz et, en 2018, la monographie “ELEMENTAL” par Phaidon.
Les œuvres d’ELEMENTAL ont été exposées dans divers lieux, du MoMA en 2010 (Small Scale, Big Change), en passant par la Biennale de l’Architecture de Venise (2008, 2012, 2018), entre autres.
ELEMENTAL a organisé la XVe Biennale de Venise en 2016. Une rétrospective solo a récemment été inaugurée au Louisiana Art Museum au Danemark en octobre 2018. Le travail d’ELEMENTAL fait également partie de la collection permanente du Centre Pompidou.
Alejandro Aravena a été récompensé à travers de nombreux prix : le Lion d’argent à la Biennale de Venise en 2008, le prix Index Award en 2011 à Copenhague, le Design de l’année pour le Centre d’Innovation Angelini en 2015 à Londres et le prix Göteborg pour le développement durable en 2017 (attribué pour la première fois à un architecte).
En 2016, Alejandro Aravena a reçu le prix Pritzker.
