Le défi que représentait le fait de grandir en tant que femme noire dans l’Afrique du Sud de l’apartheid a conduit Naomi Tutu à s’engager en tant que militante pour les droits de l’homme. Cette expérience lui a montré le danger de juger les individus en fonction de la race et du genre. Dans ses discours, elle aborde les questions relatives à la condition de l’homme avec humour et illustre son récit par son histoire personnelle.
Naomi est la troisième enfant de l’archevêque Desmond et de Nomalizo Leah Tutu. Née en Afrique du Sud, elle a également vécu au Lesotho, au Royaume-Uni et aux États-Unis. Elle a fait ses études au Swaziland, aux États-Unis et en Angleterre, et a passé sa vie d’adulte partagée entre l’Afrique du Sud et les États-Unis. Grandir en tant que fille de l’archevêque Desmond Tutu a apporté à Naomi de nombreuses opportunités et défis dans sa vie. Elle a alors relevé les défis et saisi les opportunités qui lui ont été données pour élever sa voix en tant que porte-parole de la dignité pour tous.
Au cours de ses expériences professionnelles, elle a été notamment consultante en développement en Afrique de l’Ouest et coordinatrice de programmes relatifs aux questions de race, de genre et de violences sexistes dans l’éducation à l’African Gender Institute de l’Université du Cap. Elle a enseigné aux universités de Hartford et du Connecticut et au Brevard College en Caroline du Nord.
Naomi est aujourd’hui une conférencière recherchée qui intervient auprès d’associations professionnelles, d’élus, ou encore d’organisations religieuses et civiques. Naomi a également dirigé des workshops dédiés à la vérité et à la réconciliation pour des groupes confrontés à différents types de conflits. Avec Rose Bator, elle présente un atelier intitulé « Building Bridges » traitant des questions de race et de racisme.
Très engagée dans la protection des droits de l’homme, Naomi est également consultante auprès de deux organisations : la Spiritual Alliance to Stop Intimate Violence (SAIV), fondée par la célèbre auteure Riane Eisler et la lauréate du prix Nobel de la paix Betty Williams, et la Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa (FHSSA).
