Sir Peter Westmacott a été ambassadeur du Royaume-Uni en Turquie de 2002 à 2006, puis en France de 2007 à 2012, et aux États-Unis de 2012 à 2016. Depuis avril 2017, il a été nommé administrateur non exécutif indépendant (Independent Non-Executive) chez Ernest & Young.
Sir Peter Westmacott a débuté sa carrière politique à l’âge de 22 ans. Il a été désigné à la direction du Moyen-Orient du Foreign Office, avant d’obtenir un premier poste à l’ambassade d’Iran à Téhéran en tant que Troisième secrétaire, de 1974 à 1978.
Au cours de ses quarante années au sein du service diplomatique britannique, Sir Peter Westmacott passe au total quatre années en Iran (avant la révolution) et est affecté à la Commission Européenne à Bruxelles en 1978, en tant qu’expert national chargé des questions méditerranéennes.
De 1990 à 1993, il occupe le poste de Directeur de Cabinet adjoint auprès de Sa Majesté Royale le Prince de Galles.
De 1997 à 2000, il est nommé Directeur du bureau du Foreign and Commonwealth Office pour l’Amérique du Nord, avant de rejoindre le bureau en tant que député sous-secrétaire
Avant d’être nommé ambassadeur du Royaume-Uni aux États-Unis, Peter Westmacott a occupé les mêmes fonctions d’ambassadeur en France de 2007 à 2012 et en Turquie de 2002 à 2006. C’est d’ailleurs lors de ce mandat qu’il fait face à l’attentat-suicide contre le Consulat britannique à Istanbul faisant quinze victimes.
Par la suite, il participe activement aux négociations visant à l’entrée de la Turquie dans l’Union Européenne.
A l’heure actuelle, Sir Westmacott intervient régulièrement lors de conférences à travers la planète, en anglais mais aussi en français, sur des thématiques telles que la politique, les relations internationales, l’Europe, le Brexit et les élections américaines.
Il est actuellement fellow à l’IOP et Senior Fellow au Belfer Center de la Kennedy School à l’Université de Harvard.
Sir Westmacott est Commandeur de la Légion d’honneur et Chevalier Commandeur de l’ordre de Saint-Michel et Saint-Georges.
