Sir John Sawers a dédié sa carrière à la politique étrangère et à la sécurité internationale.
Après plusieurs années passées au sein du service de renseignement MI6, Sir John a travaillé comme diplomate au Moyen-Orient, en Afrique et aux États-Unis. Il a été conseiller en politique étrangère du Premier ministre Tony Blair, puis ambassadeur en Égypte, directeur politique au Foreign Office et ambassadeur du Royaume-Uni auprès des Nations unies à New York.
En 2009, il a été rappelé à Londres pour devenir chef du MI6, poste qu’il a occupé pendant cinq ans.
En tant que chef du MI6, il a participé au Conseil national de sécurité du Royaume-Uni et au Joint Intelligence Committee, contribuant aux stratégies et aux décisions politiques sur la manière de promouvoir et de protéger les intérêts britanniques dans le monde.
Il a dirigé le MI6 pendant une période de bouleversements politiques internationaux et de menaces terroristes élevées, notamment contre les Jeux olympiques de Londres en 2012. Il a également modernisé le mode de fonctionnement du service et créé une approche plus ouverte de la responsabilité publique.
Depuis qu’il a quitté le service public, Sir John conseille des dirigeants du secteur privé sur la géopolitique et les risques politiques. En 2019, il a créé sa propre société, Newbridge Advisory. Il a également été directeur non exécutif de BP de 2015 à 2024.
Sir John Sawers a étudié dans les universités de Nottingham, St Andrews et Harvard.
