Bertrand Piccard est l’instigateur et le président du projet Solar Impulse, qui lui a permis de réaliser le premier tour du monde à bord d’un avion propulsé exclusivement grâce à l’énergie solaire. De Mars 2015 à Juillet 2016, Bertrand Piccard et son compatriote suisse, André Borschberg, ont été les premiers à parcourir 40 000 kilomètres dans les airs en 17 étapes, sans aucun carburant fossile. Bertrand et son acolyte ont ensuite publié un ouvrage, « Objectif Soleil », retraçant leur aventure.
Cette dernière ne s’est d’ailleurs pas déroulée sans encombre : après avoir effectué la première traversée d’un océan en avion solaire via un vol record entre le Japon et Taïwan, des batteries défectueuses forcent Piccard et Borschberg à repousser la deuxième moitié du voyage à Avril 2016.
Durant toute la durée de l’expédition, les deux pilotes doivent rester en état d’alerte constant. Ils ne s’autorisent que des siestes d’une durée maximale de vingt minutes et subissent les conséquences physiques de leur confinement dans un cockpit de 3.8 m3 : à peine plus grand qu’une cabine téléphonique publique.
Au-delà de l’accomplissement d’un rêve, l’objectif du projet Solar Impulse est de promouvoir les énergies renouvelables et les économies d’énergie, en s’inscrivant dans une tradition familiale qui combine exploration scientifique, protection de l’environnement et recherche d’une meilleure qualité de vie. Bertrand Piccard déclare ainsi : “L’aventure du XXIème consiste à utiliser la créativité humaine et l’esprit pionnier pour atteindre une qualité de vie à laquelle les générations présentes et futures ont le droit”.
Plus récemment, Bertrand Piccard a lancé le label « Solar Impulse », dont l’objectif est de mettre en avant une nouvelle approche pour la protection de l’environnement. Via la« World Alliance for Efficient Solutions » (l’Alliance mondiale pour des solutions efficaces), Bertrand Piccard souhaite sélectionner 1000 solutions de protection de l’environnement rentables, qui seront ensuite présentées aux décideurs de la COP24, afin les encourager à adopter des objectifs environnementaux plus ambitieux.
Issu d’une dynastie d’explorateurs et de scientifiques, Bertrand Piccard réalise le premier tour du monde en ballon sans escale, du 1er au 21 mars 1999, avec l’anglais Brian Jones. Il s’agit du plus long vol en ballon en termes de distance comme de durée. Ce succès le projette sur le devant de la scène et lui vaut le nom de “savanturier”, ou scientifique-aventurier.
Bertrand Piccard est également un psychiatre reconnu internationalement, un aéronaute et un conférencier. Président de la fondation à but non lucratif Winds of Hope et Ambassadeur de Bonne Volonté pour les Nations-Unies, il promeut la possibilité d’une meilleur qualité de vie grâce à un mélange de science et d’aventure.
