Premier petit-fils de Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Fabien Cousteau passe ses jeunes années à bord des bateaux de son illustre grand-père, Calypso et Alcyone, et apprend à plonger le jour de son quatrième anniversaire.
Fabien Cousteau est connu pour son étude des requins et pour son émission “Attack of the Mystery Shark” (l’attaque du requin mystérieux), réalisée alors qu’il était grand explorateur pour la National Geographic dans le but de remettre en cause les préjugés du public. Dans le cadre du documentaire ‘Mind of a Demon’ (L’esprit d’un démon) qu’il réalise plus tard pour la CBS, il construit un sous-marin en forme de requin de plus de 4 mètres de long et pesant plus de 544 kilos, ce qui lui permet d’intégrer le monde des requins, offrant aux spectateurs un aperçu rare de la vie de ces créatures incomprises.
Pendant plusieurs années, Fabien Cousteau apparaît aux côtés de son père Jean-Michel et de sa soeur, Céline, dans une série télé pour PBS intitulée ‘Ocean Adventures’ et qui s’inspire des programmes que son grand-père animait déjà pour la chaîne en 1978.
En 2014, Fabien Cousteau et son équipe d’aquanautes embarquent sur Mission 31, la plus longue expédition scientifique se déroulant au sein d’Aquarius, le seul laboratoire sous-marin du monde situé en Floride. Mission 31 ouvre la voie pour de nouvelles explorations océanographiques et célèbre le 50ème anniversaire de l’expérience sous-marine menée par son grand-père (Conshelf Two) en allant plus profondément, plus longtemps et plus loin que l’originale, le tout étant diffusé en direct sur plusieurs chaînes et révélant ainsi au monde l’aventure, la dramaturgie et le mystique du monde sous-marin.
En 2016, il réalise son rêve de vouloir ‘créer un moyen de changer positivement le monde’ en fondant le Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center (OLC).
