Tristan Nitot a commencé à développer ses premiers logiciels à l’âge de 14 ans, au début des années 1980. Grand défenseur des logiciels libres et des libertés numériques, il est célèbre pour avoir fondé l’association Mozilla Europe en 2003 et préparé le lancement du navigateur web Firefox.
Il est aujourd’hui entrepreneur, auteur et un conférencier plébiscité.
Fasciné par la micro-informatique, les réseaux informatiques, Internet et le Web, il se forme seul au développement logiciel et au ethical hacking. En 1997, il rejoint la société Netscape et participe au lancement du projet Mozilla.
Après 17 ans passés au sein du projet à but non-lucratif Mozilla (connu pour le navigateur Firefox), Tristan est devenu Chief Product Officer du projet open source Cozy Cloud, une start-up française fournissant une solution de cloud personnel « private by design ».
En juin 2018, il rejoint le moteur de recherche français éthique Qwant en tant que Vice-Président « Advocacy ».
De septembre 2019 à janvier 2020, Tristan Nitot a succédé à Eric Léandri au poste de directeur général de Qwant par intérim, en charge de l’ensemble de la direction opérationnelle du moteur de recherche.
En janvier 2020, Tristan Nitot annonce qu’il quitte la direction exécutive de l’entreprise pour se consacre à des missions davantage tournées vers la technique.
Après 3 ans en tant que membre du Conseil National du Numérique (2013-2016), Tristan a publié en octobre 2016 un livre intitulé « Surveillance://, les libertés au défi du numérique : comprendre et agir », publié chez C&F Éditions. Il y traite de la condition du respect de la vie privée à l’ère du digital. Il a coordonné l’écriture de l’ouvrage « Numérique, reprendre le contrôle » chez Framabook la même année.
Promoteur du libre et du respect de la vie privée, Tristan est également membre du comité de prospective de la CNIL depuis septembre 2015 et du Comité National Pilote pour l’Éthique du Numérique.
