En 2004, Stephen Attenborough a été invité par Richard Branson à rejoindre Virgin Galactic, devenant ainsi le premier employé à temps plein de l’entreprise. Il avait à ses débuts comme missions de définir la stratégie commerciale de l’entreprise et de créer un nouveau marché pour les voyages spatiaux privés. Désormais, il dirige l’ensemble des activités, regroupant la gestion de la marque, les ventes, le marketing, le service client, la communication, l’éducation et la sensibilisation, ainsi que les partenariats visant le secteur des vols commerciaux. On compte aujourd’hui 700 futurs astronautes inscrits issus de plus de 50 pays, ainsi que 80 millions de dollars de dépôts pour les prochains voyages programmés.
Attenborough a également été en charge de l’étude et du développement d’applications non touristiques concernant les nouveaux véhicules spatiaux, en particulier la recherche scientifique et le lancement de petits satellites.
